Covid-19 Updates

The latest from UNC Greensboro

Dear UNCG Community,

As you know, we have been closely monitoring the impacts of the COVID-19 situation on our international programs and study abroad students. It is increasingly clear that our commitment as a public institution requires us to take further steps to help reduce the continued transmission of Covid-19.

In light of this, at the direction of the UNC System, we have made the difficult decisions to suspend all study abroad programs that have not yet commenced, cancel Summer 2020 study abroad programs, and where possible and reasonable endeavor to bring students currently studying abroad home.

In making these decisions, the UNC System and UNCG have carefully considered the potential impact of the virus on our study abroad students and their families, both in terms of students’ health and safety, and their academic progress. It is critical we all do our part to slow the transmission of the virus to protect the health of others who may be at elevated risk and to allow the healthcare system to care for those who become seriously ill. Limiting travel is one way the University is actively trying to support this effort.

Because not all situations with students currently abroad are the same, we will work with each individual student to assess their situation and determine if and when exceptions can be made.

We know that our students have been looking forward to an exciting, challenging, and rewarding study abroad experience for many months, if not longer. We are making this difficult decision now because it provides students who have not yet begun their program with a timeframe to make alternative plans for the summer and to continue academic progress, while avoiding additional expense and health risks. Students should explore UNCG’s Summer School registration, which opens April 1. Most courses are available online, permitting students to take classes from virtually any location. Registration is underway now. Units across campus will work with students to address specific needs in a manner that causes the least disruption possible to plans for on-time graduation.

The International Programs Center (IPC) will be working with departmental program directors to return recoverable costs as soon as possible. Please note this may take some time so we thank you in advance for your patience.

We hope many students will indeed have another opportunity to study abroad during their time at UNC Greensboro. Please contact study abroad advisors with any questions (by email: studyabroad@uncg.edu or by phone: 336.334.5404).

Thank you.
